Walking for Our Elders: Observing World Alzheimer’s Month at JoNa Clinic

JoNa Clinic partnered with Dementia Awareness Zimbabwe (DEMAZ) and Greenwood Pharmacy during World Alzheimer’s Month for a community walk in Gwanda honoring our gogos, khulus, and caregivers.
World Alzheimer's Month

In the day-to-day rhythm of running a busy rural healthcare facility, it is easy to get caught up in appointments, prescriptions, and building projects. But every so often, we are reminded to pause and celebrate the extraordinary strength of the community we serve.

In recognition of World Alzheimer’s Month, JoNa Clinic joined hands with Dementia Awareness Zimbabwe (DEMAZ) and Greenwood Pharmacy for an impactful community awareness walk right here in Mayezane, Gwanda. Together with local residents, healthcare workers, and families, we walked to honor the resilience of our patients living with dementia and to recognize the selfless dedication of the family members who care for them every single day.

Understanding the Journey of Our Gogos and Khulus

Dementia touches millions of families across the globe, and our region in Southwest Zimbabwe is no exception. We regularly see the changing lives of our beloved gogos (grandmothers) and khulus (grandfathers).

Dementia is not simply “getting old”—it is a progressive condition that affects memory, thinking, and daily behavior. Watching a loved one experience these changes can be heartbreaking and confusing for families. Raising awareness alongside dedicated advocacy groups like DEMAZ is our first step toward removing the stigma around cognitive decline in rural communities. When we understand what our elders are going through, it encourages all of us to respond with deeper kindness, compassion, and patience.

How You Can Support Dementia Awareness Today

Healthcare does not begin and end at the clinic doors—it happens in our homes and neighborhoods. Here is how you can practice compassion in your daily life:

  • For Families with Elderly Relatives: Check in on them regularly. Show them they are cherished, listen to their stories, and remain patient and present through every new stage of their life journey.
  • For Neighbors and Friends: Caregiving can be physically and emotionally exhausting. If you know someone caring for a loved one with dementia, offer them direct support, words of encouragement, or a temporary break so they can rest.

Strength in Partnership

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our partners at Dementia Awareness Zimbabwe (DEMAZ) and Greenwood Pharmacy for walking alongside us. By combining our resources, expertise, and voices, we can ensure that no family in Gwanda faces the challenges of dementia alone.

At JoNa Clinic, we remain committed to caring for the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—across every stage of life.

Together, we can build a more compassionate future for our elders.
