The Heart of the Clinic: Why Social Connection is Medicine

If you were to visit JoNa Clinic this week, you’d see two things: the beautiful, much-needed rain falling over Mayezane, and our team huddled around a table planning our next big move.

While the rain is a blessing for our crops, it has made the soil soft and the roads tricky. This means our trucks carrying bricks and cement for the new Post-Partum Unit have to wait for the mud to dry before we can safely begin hauling materials.

But at JoNa Clinic, “waiting” doesn’t mean “stopping.” While our construction project takes a brief breather, our mission to serve the community is moving full speed ahead.

More Than Aches and Pains

We have always believed that health is more than just the absence of physical ailments. To be truly well, one must be healthy in spirit, mind, and social connection.

In our corner of Gwanda, we’ve noticed a quiet epidemic: loneliness. Many of our elders live just a few miles apart, but because of mobility challenges, they may go months without seeing a friend. Their children are often away working hard to provide, leaving our “grandpas and grandmas” isolated at home.

On April 11, 2026, we are prescribing a different kind of medicine: A Social Outreach Day.

A Celebration of Wisdom

We are inviting every person aged 70 and older within a 10km radius to join us at the clinic for a day of pure joy. We’ve already had 110 guests sign up!

We aren’t just giving them a check-up; we are giving them a celebration.

  • Transportation: We are sending vehicles to pick them up so mobility is no barrier.
  • A Feast: We are preparing a hearty, delicious meal for everyone.
  • Connection: There will be music, dancing, and plenty of time to talk and reconnect with old friends.
  • Gifts: Every guest will leave with a “goodie bag” to help them remember that they are seen, loved, and valued.

A Very Special Guest

The highlight of our day will be our keynote speaker, Mrs. Nellie Mlotshwa. At 92 years old, Nellie lives just 2km from the clinic. She is a woman who loves Jesus and carries the history of Mayezane in her heart. We can’t wait to sit at her feet and listen to the wisdom she has to share.

How You Can Help

While the river sand stays put for a few more days, our hearts are overflowing. This outreach is only possible because of the continued support of people like you.

We are still looking for partners to help cover the costs of the transport, the meal, and the gift packages for our 110 guests. A small gift goes a long way in making a grandmother or grandfather feel cherished.

Thank you for running this race with us—whether through the mud of construction or the joy of community. We are praying for a rain-free day on April 11th, but no matter the weather, the light at JoNa Clinic will be shining bright.
