The shovels have hit the dirt, and the digging of the trenches to lay the structural foundation is now complete.
Restoring Dignity to Rural Maternity Care
At Jona and Nana Mlotshwa Clinic (JoNa Clinic), we hold a firm conviction: Good healthcare is a basic human right, regardless of economic or social standing.
Over our six years serving Southwest Zimbabwe, we have witnessed the incredible resilience of local mothers. Many walk miles through challenging terrain while in active labor just to deliver their babies safely at our clinic. However, because we lack a dedicated recovery space, these mothers often have to walk those same miles back home shortly after giving birth—without proper rest, a warm shower, or a comfortable bed.
In Zimbabwe, maternal mortality rates range between 358 and 365 deaths per 100,000 live births, and that risk is often higher in rural populations where access to care is limited. Post-partum complications, especially hemorrhage, are always a dangerous possibility.
Our new unit will change this reality forever. It will create a safe physical environment where mothers and their newborns can remain under our close clinical care and observation until they are healthy, strong, and ready to travel home safely.
The Road Ahead: Reaching Our $60,000 Goal
To complete the entire facility—including specialized medical equipment, construction materials, skilled labor, and the transport of heavy supplies to Mayezane—our financial goal stands at $60,000 USD.
Mother Nature gave us a clear window to dig our foundation, and we are trusting that the funds will continue to flow so our build team can raise the walls without delay.
