When we finalized our Bill of Quantities earlier this year, we knew the roadmap to completing our new Post-Partum Unit would require patience, faith, and flexibility. This past month, our resilience was put to the test by some very unexpected weather.
An Unexpected Deluge
In late April, heavy and unseasonal rains swept through the region. For a few days, travel to Mayezane became almost impossible due to the soft soil and muddy roads. As we mentioned in our previous update, traveling under these conditions with heavy machinery is incredibly tricky, so we had to pause and wait for the African sun to do its work.
But a delay is not a denial!
21 Tons of Blessing
We are thrilled to report that on May 2nd, the clouds parted, the roads dried sufficiently, and our team successfully delivered the first 21 tons of river sand to the clinic site.
As you may remember, the river sand and pit sand are available to us for free from our local environment—a massive blessing that keeps our project costs down. Seeing that first massive truckload arrive on-site was a beautiful reminder that our plans are steadily moving forward.
Our Current Focus: The Bulawayo Pipeline
Now that the foundation materials are arriving, we are shifting our focus to the next major logistical phase: transporting our industrial bricks, face bricks, and quarry stone from Bulawayo.
Our current checklist includes:
- Securing reliable trucks capable of handling heavy construction loads on rural roads.
- Managing the transport budget to ensure every dollar donated is optimized.
- Coordinating the arrival of our 500 bags of cement to match the brick delivery.
